BLUE SPRINGS. Mo – The Kansas City Chiefs may just be the hungriest team in the NFL, according to a metro business, and it should know.
Zarda Bar-BQ manned smokers Wednesday to continue a tradition of Kansas City Training Camp. This is the 34th year the business will transport a large amount of food for the camp and feed 150 team members and staff.
“We have the greatest city in the world. We think we have the greatest football team in the world, and the greatest cuisine in Kansas City barbeque,” Terry Hyer, COO Zarda Bar-BQ, said.
Zarda said it smoked hundreds of pounds of meat, including ribs and turkey, for the occasion.
Like the Chiefs, barbecue isn’t complete without a side of deliciousness. Zarda also carries gallons of Cheesy Potato Bake, Burnt End Baked Beans, and White Cheddar Mac-n-Cheese.
These are just some of the quantities Zarda is ready to take.
- 100 pounds end burn
- 75 pounds of brisket
- 10 gallons of roasted beans
- 7 gallons of Mac-n-cheese
- 7 gallons of Cheesy Potatoes
The Chiefs will also have a selection of Zarda sauce to enjoy, including Original Zarda sauce, Thick and spicy, Apple Harvest, Lil’Ghost and several other options.
Hyer said she gets nervous every year that they will run out of food before dinner.
“I think the perception is that big offensive linemen eat the most, but my experience is wide receivers and cornerbacks, and some of these guys eat as much or more as these big offensive linemen,” Hyer.
For some players who are new to the team, barbecue day at training camp will be their first time experiencing Kansas City-style barbecue.
“Sometimes training camp for them is their first experience with Kansas City barbecue, and it’s fun to see them walk up and see what’s on the line with all these ribs, burnt ends, mac-n-cheese and all the things laid out. It’s a time that’s exciting for them,” Hyer said. “The vets know what’s coming. Children, they don’t know if they haven’t been here.
Hyer said Zarda will be enticing Chiefs with a different menu next week. He said Head Coach Andy Reid is the only one to have Zarda feed the team twice during the same training camp.
It is something that the Chiefs players seem to be looking forward to as much as Zarda.
“When we go and we have a smoker outside, the players go up, and these are people who are skilled athletes, who stick their heads in the smoker asking us how long the brisket should be smoked, what kind of spices we do, and they are cooking at home, Hyer said.
Zarda also gave Chiefs extra special treatment.
Every year Zarda brings something to the training camp that is either new, or not on the regular menu of our restaurant.
This year the team will attempt to test a thick Texas brisket seasoned only with salt and pepper. Hyde says it cooks longer and is very tender and can be cut with a butter knife.
They will also enjoy white cheddar mac topped with a choice of burnt ends, pulled pork, or sliced brisket.
