What is quiet quiet, and why is it so popular?

(NewsNation) — Do you feel burned out at your job, but quitting isn’t an option?

Gen Z may have a solution, but it’s causing some controversy. This is called “quiet quitting,” and it means consciously deciding to put in less effort in your job. The hope is to avoid burnout and work hard to not get fired.

TikToker @zkchillin describes the “quietness” in him viral video which has more than 3 million views and almost 500,000 likes.

“You don’t immediately quit your job, but you leave with the idea of going above and beyond,” he said. “You’re still doing your job, but you’re no longer subscribing to the hustle and bustle culture mentality that you have to use for your life. The reality is that your value as a person is not defined by your work.

Psychotherapist Amy Morin said Monday night on “Banfield” that it’s not about being lazy.

“We’re talking about stopping the hustle culture, the idea that you have to be 24/7, that you have to answer emails all hours of the day,” Morin said. “It’s about saying, ‘I’m going to set some healthy boundaries and work on my work-life balance.'”

However, Ranjay Gulati, a professor of business administration at Harvard Business School, says there is a risk associated with the phrase “work-life balance.”

“What is implicit behind ‘work-life balance?’ It’s that work and life are separate, does that mean I’m not living when I’m working? We’ve created… the notion that work is an abstract idea of something you do that’s not living,” said Gulati in “Banfield.”

However, he said, when it comes to meaningful work, “organizations and leadership have failed workers.”

Morin also said that meaningful work is important.

“A lot of people don’t feel that their work has any value,” he says. “We have to have money in our work to feel there is a reason to show up.
