Consumers will save

Kansas City, Mo. – Families who save some big bucks this weekend they get their kids ready to go back to school.

It’s the start of Missouri’s sales tax holiday, which runs 5-7. August.

At Missouri retailers, you can shop tax-free for items such as school supplies, computers, computer equipment and clothing.

There was a long line Friday outside the Apple store in the Country Club Plaza. Many shoppers plan to buy a computer or laptop for free.

There is no city, county or state sales tax at Apple stores as long as the computer is under $1,500.

That’s good news for students like Cierra Smith.

“We were going to go last weekend, but we were like, we can wait until tax-free weekend,” Smith said. “So we’ve been waiting.”

Almost anything a student wears to class appears to be exempt from state sales tax this weekend in Missouri.

You don’t have to be a student or live in Missouri for your purchase to qualify for the sales tax exemption.

There is a limit on how much you can spend tax free.

In addition to the $1,500 computer limit, clothing must cost $100 or less to qualify. And school supplies cannot exceed $50 per purchase.
