California is expected to ban the sale of gas vehicles by 2035

(KTLA) – California’s Air Resources Board is expected to vote Thursday to approve a plan that would ban the sale of new gas-powered vehicles in the state by 2035.

proposal, “Advanced Clean Car II“The goal is to have 35% of new vehicles sold by 2026 be zero-emission, with the percentage increasing each year. A complete ban on the sale of gas-powered vehicles in California will be implemented by 2035.

“This is going to do a lot to clean up the air in California and fight the ongoing crisis of air pollution and climate change,” Bill Magavern with the Clean Air Coalition told KTLA’s sister station, KTXL Sacramento, on Wednesday.

The regulation will help California meet clean air standards by reducing emissions, resulting in a 25% reduction in smog emissions from passenger vehicles by 2037.

The new regulation only applies to new car sales and does not affect gas-powered cars and light trucks, which are still legal to own and drive beyond 2035.

The proposal also calls for requirements for warranty, durability, streamlined fast-charging, capable charging cables, repair information, and battery range.

“A lot of people have range anxiety. They’re always worried that they’re going to run out, but there are so many chargers all over the country. And you press a button in your car and it tells you where the next charging station is and it takes you there,” Eileen said. Yurek, electric vehicle owner.

The Advanced Clean Cars 2 regulation also offers incentives to manufacturers to build low-cost electric vehicles to make them cheaper.

“It’s easy for people with enough wealth, but we need this revolution to make it all happen and provide clean mobility for all Californians,” Magavern said.

California already has the largest electric vehicle market in the country with more than 1.1 million vehicles registered. It comprises 43% of the nation’s plug-in vehicles.

“They’re going to love them. It’s like sitting in your armchair at home; it’s true. They’re going to love their car,” Yurek said.

If Advanced Clean Cars 2 is approved, it will then go to the federal Environmental Protection Agency for approval.

California climate officials say the state’s new policy will be the most ambitious in the world as it sets clear benchmarks for increasing sales of electric vehicles over the next dozen years.

The European Parliament in June backed a plan to effectively ban the sale of gas and diesel cars in the 27-nation bloc by 2035, and Canada has ordered the sale of zero-emission cars in the same year. China’s Hainan province said this week it will do the same by 2030.

In the US, Massachusetts, Washington and New York are states that have set goals to reform their car markets or have committed to following California’s new rules.
