Amazon opened a new, high-tech facility in Liberty, Missouri

LIBERTY, Mo. – Holiday shopping season is here, and Amazon is stepping up its game with a new, high-tech location in the Kansas City area.

In the video player above, take an inside look at the 500,000-square-foot facility in Northland.

Robots are in full swing, and people are hard at work at the new Amazon sorting center in Liberty. It will be a Midwest hub, helping to route packages to people all over the country.

“They have nine cameras for each robot arm,” site leader Mikenna McEntee said of what’s called Robin. “It helps them read the two dimensions, as well as the labeling on the package and then go to the destination.”

There are 20 Robins along the route. It uses air suction to pick up packages and put them into another robot called Pegasus Drive. Amazon said it has 900 Pegasus robots roaming around the 115,000-square-foot floor, all on a mission.

The Pegasus Drives will carry each package to one of the 300 chutes. From there, it will go to the next destination.

McEntee said they have one of the largest and newest facilities in terms of technology.

This is impressive, but he is especially proud of the unique team they have built in Liberty. The warehouse operations leader is all female.

“Very, very excited to have an all-female team, but more than that, excited for the relationships we can build as we continue to grow in this community,” she said.

McEntee said technology isn’t eliminating people’s jobs. This just makes the work more efficient.

“It helps us minimize unnecessary movement and allows us to process more customer packages, ultimately allowing us to do same-day, one-day, two-day shipping at best,” he said.

Kansas City residents like Greg Allen love the idea of booking a vacation ahead of time.

“Anything that gets people working and getting our stuff out faster, that’s good for me,” he told FOX4.

In the last two months, the Amazon facility has hired more than 1,000 people. They are still looking to fill 500 positions. Starting pay starts at $17 an hour with benefits starting on the first day of employment. If you are interested in joining the team, you can apply here.
